Report on Annual Sports Day 2013

School of Education organized a one day Sports day for its students of B.Ed and MA Education on the 16th of February 2013. Its objective was to develop in the students a sporting spirit, a venue to display their physical prowess and gain hands on experience of organizing a sports day at a school in future.  The day was scheduled to begin at 7:30am at the Christ University campus, where the students assembled near the auditorium block. Two buses were utilized to transport the students to the Christ University Kengeri campus which was the venue of the Sports Day. All required arrangements were made there. On reaching the campus at 9:00 am, there was short break for tea. Ample seating arrangement and a tent was erected on the vast sporting grounds of the campus.

The inauguration commenced at 9:30 am with an invocation song. This was followed by a welcome and inaugural speech by the chief guest Prof. Glady Jacob, administrator, Christ University, Kengeri campus his words of wisdom, especially drawn from his own personal life were inspiring and it set the tone for the day. Prof. Jose Cherian, Head of Department, School of Education, Christ University declared the sports day open. 

The judges for the day were eminent and experienced sports referees Mr. A Nagarjuna and Mr. M.S Nagarjuna. They guided all the sports events of the day with their fair and unbiased judgement. They patiently explained the rules of the games scheduled and graced the sports day with their expertise.

The sports events kicked off with a motivating example set by the walking race for the faculty members of the School of Education. After this exciting start the various events lined up for the day quickly progressed. 

The students of School of Education were divided into 5 teams of 20 each with a faculty guide for each team. Exciting and energetic names were given to each group- Blue whales, Red bulls, White tigers and Black jaguars. Teams designed flags for their teams too.


 

100, 200 and 400m race for both boys and girls was organized. The much anticipated mixed relay race and boy’s sack race was followed by shot put and discus throws for both boys and girls. Long jump for boys and girls was followed by the girls three legged race which saw maximum participation. The events were finished off with the most energetic and cheered tug of war for the girls where all the members of the team competed against each other.

After announcement of the winners by Ms. Greta D’Souza, the medals and certificate was distributed by Fr. Thomas TV, Director of the School of Education to the winners of each event. Overall best performance in all events was also awarded and the winning team was also applauded. His speech stressed the importance of sporting sprit. The prize distribution ceremony was completed by 1:30pm, and was completed with a photo session. The students were then led to the cafeteria for lunch.

At 2pm Fr. Thomas TV, Director of the School of Education led the students on a guided campus tour which interactive while he patiently answered all questions and enthusiastically explained the Christ University attempts to maintain a green and eco friendly campus. This tour was greatly appreciated by the students. The tour ended at 3:30 pm and then the students boarded buses for the trip back to the main campus.

It was an exciting day for the students of School of Education and the returning trip was filled with lots of nostalgic memories of the eventful and educational day. It highlighted the importance of the sports and a sporting spirit to these future teachers.

The sports day of our school was held on the 10th of December this year. The school field was well decorated, and we kept many chairs for the visitors. The sports began at 2 p.m. Many students took part in the competitions. All the races and the high jumps were fascinating. There was a balanced race for girls. At last, there was a tug of war between the students of classes VI and VII. After this, prizes were given away to the winners. Everybody cheered them by clapping. The day of the annual sports of our school is always fascinating for us.

Sports day in school provides a necessary change in the study-schedule, fills them with happy cheers and puts their youthful spirit on the right track. So games is a must in schools life.

So sport is a healthy outlet for the excess of such energy. This certainly enables them to be free from all sorts of mischievous tendencies and pay their attention to studies. Athletics teaches them a sense of discipline. Games and sports have their rules of conduct and students are supposed to obey them in the play-field. All this mends their unruly behaviour and makes them more disciplined.

The students who do well in athletics get every encouragement in their school. Their better performance in games and sports may bring them to the limelight. Some of them may get selected for State and National teams and thus earn name and fame in the country and abroad. After they complete their studies, their athletics background may help them get good jobs.

The annual sports day is an essential part of school education. It can never be neglected at any cost. Students go to school, sit tight in their respective classrooms for hours together and visit the reading-room to collect materials for their study. Thus they keep themselves busy all day with activities relating to study. Now they certainly need some diversion in their serious routine-work.

It is true that study is the primary objective of the school curriculum. But 'all work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy.' So co-curricular activities are provided to students to keep them active all the time. They are athletics, dramas, debates, and so on. Each school has an athletic association of its own. The students' representatives are its members. There is a Secretary duly elected by students to manage the show. The teacher for Physical education is there to guide the association in all athletic activities.

Athletics teaches students the value of cooperation and team spirit. The help them work together for their school. While taking part in games, every student plays as a member of their school team. This creates in them a sense of fellow-feeling and helps them work together for a common interest. This is very much helpful in their practical life. Sports instil in them the spirit of sportsmanship. A true sportsman accepts victory and defeats with a smile on his face. The students taking part in games and sports acquíre this spirit which enables them to face the challenges of life. It is said that the Battle of Waterloo was won on the play-field of Eton. So, taking part in athletics is quite useful to students in their life ahead.

Athletics is an essential part of school co-curricular activities. But an excess participation in it at the cost of studies will do more harm than good to one's life and career. So students should not think that athletics is the be-all and end-all of their life. They should in no case neglect their studies on the plea of athletics Every good athlete should always try to be good at studies. Then they will be able to carve out a good career in their life.
